WILL IT BE PLAYED FOR IN LEVIN? Visions of the Ranfurly Shield coming to Levin were awakened at the Horowhenua Eugbj; District Council meeting last night, when a discussion arose over thp prospects cf the match between Manawhenua and Taranaki being played on a local ground. Mr M. Eyder first ?nentioned the>matter and said that, in ihe event of the match being played at Levin, he thought it might be possible ro secure the use of the racecourse. For every four Manawhenua matches Levin was entitled to one, according to the rules. Football in this place lately had been robbed of all its interest owing to the best players being away with •he rep. team. Mr F. Robinson said there was no mggestion that this district should not he the locale of the match against Taranaki. The combined Union were only too willing to give the match. Mr Evder: 1 think they are sticking'to the rule. They have had four matches; we have not had one.

Mr H. McDonald stated that game depended on Taranaki. Manawatu was nuite willing ' The Chairman (Mr J. J. We have two out of five combined Union matches. •

Mr Robinson: They gave us the op'ion of Taraaaki or Wanganui, and we took Taranaki. I want to get a Shield match here. It has been left at the option of the Taranaki people, in the (vent of their being prepared to cancel their acco.inr.odation at Palmerston and stop at Levin on their way back. The Chairman said he had had experience of the racecourse for a match and he did not think it suitable,, because the grandstand was too far away from the ground. Mr Ryder: I thought it might come in for a wet day. The Chairman: We might want it later on.

Mr J. W. Procter stated that the grandstand was two and a half chains from the edge of the oval. The discussion then dropped.

CANTERBURY MAKES A BID. PROVISIONAL CHALLENGE TO MANAWHENUA. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. After a discussion last evening, on the value of shields and trophies, the Canterbury Rugby Union decided to send Manawhenua a provisional challenge for a Ranfurly Shield match on September 7th. The ordinary Manawhenua fixture against Canterbury is set down in the Union's list to be played at Palmerston on Wednesday, September 7th. The date allotted for "the match between Manawhenua and Taranaki, in The event of its being played at Palmerston, was Wednesday, August 31st.
