RUGBY FOOTBALL.

HOROWHENUA CONTROLLING AUTHORITY. A LONG SITTING. Ihe management committee of the Horowhenua Rugby District Council sar till 12 o'clock last night, at its weekly meeting in the Wistaria Rooms, a great variety of business being dealt with. There "were present: Messrs J. J. O'Connor (president), T. Wrigley (Kuku), W. Neville (Foxton), J. W. Procter (Hm Mai), W..S. Joyce (Weraroa), M. Ryder S. Austin (Foxton), H. McDonald (Schools), W. Robson (Miranui), F. Robinson (Awahou), A. Richards (Shannon), M. Winiata (selector), J. Casey (Secretary), and J. W. Rimmer (treasurer). COUNTY-HUI MAI FINAL ON SATURDAY WEEK.

A letter was reeived from Mr C. Frechtling, secretary of the County Club, requesting that the final between County and Hui Mai for the senior championship be postponed till the Manawhenua team returned from its tour. County had a number of players on the sick list owing to injuries received in representative games, and also had members in the rep. team, thus weakening the local team. The secretary stated that in the ordinary course the match would be played on Saturday, August 20th. On that day the combined team would be playing Auckland. The first free Saturday was September 10th. Mr Robinson suggested that the fixtures be drawn up for the Nash Cup knock-out competition, and that the final for the senior championship be played after the tour. ' Mr Ryder said it was no good starting one competition before the other was finished. He moved that the match be played as set down. Mr Procter remarked that if the game were postponed as requested, a number of the Hui Mai players would be busy on account of the milking season.

Mr Richards pointed out that the postponing of the match would ensure better gate receipts. Mr McDonald said lie would like to see done to meet the County Club, which was very unfortunate in having several men out of action. The position was different from that of the Nash Cup contest, which only comprised one or two games. The chairman said that if it were possible for the two teams to meet on a Wednesday, he would be in favour of it, but the matter had been held over too long. Mr Robson said he was opposed to the .motion for the playing of the match on the original date. On a previous occasion he was the mover of an amendment that if a team had three or more players away, it should be relieved of its obligation. Mr Procter explained that County only had two men away with the reps. —namely, Parata and McDonald.

Mr Robson: In that ease I will not oppose it.

The motion was carried. Mr Richards said that as this was practically the final for the cup, the match should be played in Levin. They would not be likely to get much of a gate at Manakan. The chairman said he was in favour of having the match in Levin, seeing that it was a final and that the ground at Manakau would be taxed to its utmost. If the people went on the ground there, they would be on the line, to the inconvenience of the players and referee, while if they stopped on the hill there would be no money from them. NASH CUP. The nomination of the Awahou senior/team for the Nash Cup competition was accepted. AWAHOU FORFEIT TO HUI MAI. Mr C. Nees, on behalf of the Hui Mai Club, wrote enteriag a protest against * the match against Awahou, awarded to the latter team, on Saturday, on the ground that Awahou played Rangi, who had played for the Shannon Club this season (Rule 9b). The captain of the Hui Mai team informed the referee and the captain of the Awahou team, before the game commenced, that he was playing under protest for the above reason. A letter was received from Mr K. Davis, referee in the above match, stating that on arriving on the Foxton ground just before 3 o 'clock he found Awahou not ready. However, with as litle delay as possible, they managed to field a strong side, several of whom wer<> unknown to him, such as Rangi, Gotty, Poto, and Joe. Mr Austin moved that the 'Hui Mai protest be upheld. Mr Robinson stated that he was in Carterton on the day in question and he wired in answer to a request from Awahou to get a practice'match at all costs in order to provide a game. The only one ineligible to play was Rangi. The motion was carried, and it was decided to award the game to Hui Mai and return their protest fee of 10s. JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP TO ' MIBANUI. The secretary reported that the i"o----sults of the junior championship competition were as follow: —Miranui 20 points, Weraroa 19, Foxton 13, Shannon . 9, Awahou 6, Hui Mai 5. All the teams played 11 games. Miranui were adjudged the winners of the junior grade, with Weraroa as runners-up.

WANDERERS ASSURED OF THIRD GRADE NORTHERN.

: The third grade northern championj.- ship competition, the secretary reports ed, had reached a stage where Wander- " ers, with 11 games over and one still to ;' play, had 20 points. The other posi- ? tions were: Weraroa, 10 matches, 2 to ' play, 10 points; Foxton, 9 matches, 3 '. to play, 10 points; Shannon, 9 matches, V 3 to play, 8 points; Awahou, 9-matches, / no points. Wanderers' position was \ therefore unassailable. : The northern division of the thirdi; grade competition was declared closed, c and Wanderers were adjudged the win- ' r.ers of that division. ; It was decided that Wanderers thirds *" play the final for the district against ; Paraparaumu, winners of the southern \ division, on Saturday, August 20th, at - - Levin, provided that there is no repre- ' sentative game for them. In the event of a draw the match will be extended X up to two spells of 10 minutes each if &Jnecessary, the first team to scoro to be

declared the winners. Should there be no score in the extended time, the match is to be replayed on a date to be arranged by the Council. The secretary reported that he was endeavouring to arrange for a match for the third grade reps against RangiVoSITION OF FOURTH GRADE. With regard to the fourth, grade competition, the secretary reported that six matches had been played and certain fixtures undecided. The points were: Levin D.H,S. 11, Awahou 3, Foxton D.H.S. 2. The undecided games were, in the case of Levin three, Foxton four, and Awahou four. The Levin School team will play Palmerston next Saturday, and will meet Awahou at Foxton on August 20th. KEEPING ENGAGEMENTS. Mr Robinson said that the Council might express its appreciation of the way in which the various teams had fulfilled their fixtures this year. The seniors and juniors had carried out nearly all .their engagements. In other years some of the teams had played two or three matches and then dropped out. JUNIOR KNOCK-OUT A RE-PLAY.

In the junior knock-out competition, the secretary stated, Foxton won their game against Miranui. The other draw, which was not played, was Shannon v. Weraroa.

Mr Joyce stated that on Saturday last, the day for the match, Weraroa rang-up the Shannon captain in the morning and he said there was no hop>3 of getting a team. The Weraroa team assembled in Levin, and at 2 p.m. rangup the hotel in Shannon and the proprietor said there was no sign of the Shanuon team and he took it that they would not be playing. Mr Richards stated that the Shannon team kicked off, but there was no referee nresent.

Mr Joyce remarked that Weraroa hac 1 been going for seven years and had not yet defaulted in a game, and ho contended that they did not do so on Saturday. Mr Richards: The captain of the team has no right to say whether the team is going to play or not. We made the junior team up with thirds and claimed the match. We waited 20 minutes and had no advice from Weraroa. It should have come from the secretary or the management committee. Mr Joyce: It is pretty hard if we cannot take the word of the captain in a case like this. Weraroa were waiting at 2 p.m. to go up in the cars. On the previous Saturday they went to play Awaliou and' the match was defaulted. The previous season they had to go to two defaulted games. It is hard on young players if they have to pay 5s a week and get no game. It could be played next Saturday and w.ould not affect the rep. game. Mr Robson: 1 know that Shannon had a team on Saturday. I am led to believe there was some dissatisfaction and some members of the Shannon Club were not in favour of putting in a junior team.

Mr Ryder moved and Mr Austin seconded, that the game be played at some future date.

Mr Robinson pointed out that a team could not kick off and claim a match when a referee was not present. It was resolved, by seven votes to five, that the match be re-played, and that it take place on Saturday next. SCHOOL FOOTBALL. A vote of thanks was passed to the referees in the Noad Shield (primary schools) tournament —Messrs Hopa, Kingi and P. McGregor —on the motion of Mr Casey, seconded by Mr McDonald and supported by the chairman, reference being made to the efficient manner in which the referees had carried out their duties. A. letter of thanks was received from the Reikorangi school for the Council's gift of a football. The Manawhenua Union forwarded a cheque for £ls 15s as the Council's share of the N.Z.R.U. grant for the encouragement of school football. THIRD GRADE TRIAL TEAM. The following team has been selected to represent Wanderers, Weraroa and Awahou in the third-grade trial match on Saturday, in which they play against Shannon-Foxton-Paraparaumu: — Full back.— f}. Roe. Three-quarters. —P. Tukupu, N. Broadbelt, T. Lang. Five-eighths.—A. Dcrnpsev, H. Jones. Half.—D. Jones. Wing. —N. Taylor. Forwards. —L. Palmer, B. Smart, J Bond, D. Foster, C. Hobson, G. Baft. B. Whyman. Reserves. —Backs: L. Bishop, Waaka, G. Royal.
