RANFURLY SHIELD WINNERS.
LOCAL CONTINGENT WELCOMED. Tire news that Manawhenua had defeated Wairirapa and thereby provisionally won the Ranfurlv Shield, was hardly expected in Levin on Saturday, and early rumours were received with a certain amount of incredulity, which, however, gave place to pleasure and satisfaction when the scores were officially confirmed. It became known. on Sunday that lloi owlienua’s quota to the victorious combination would arrive in Levin sometime between 3 and 4 p.m. in the afternoon and quite a crowd of supporters collected outside the Grand Hotel at that hour. At 3.30 the arrival (f the victorious players was the signal for a spontaneous outburst of cheering and the tourists were overwhelmed with congratulations from all sides. Tiie proceedings were enlivened bv the appearance of the Levin Band, which rendered several items of music under the conduetorship of Mr G Lesrer, and by this time the crowd had swt lied considerably.
Mr J. O’Connor, the president of the Horowhenua District Council, on calling for three cheers for the players, the manager of the team (Mr F. Robinson), and the selector (Mr M. Winiata), referred to their wonderful achievement and also thanked the Band fen turning out to welcome the men home, a thoughful action that was much, appreciate d. Mr 11. Jacob, captain of the team. Mr Robinson, and Mr Winiata suitably responded and an informal but happy gathering terminated amidst enthusiasm.
