THE NEW MATERIALS
There is a sort of bloomy effect on some of the neAv materials—rather like a \'ery fresh and expensive peach Many new coloured AA-aterproofs, too, have this soft, dull bloom on their surface, so that they look as if they Avere made of thin velvet. It is a charming effect and they aie no dearer than ordinary mackintoshes. The new kashas are_ patterned ,or. some times just speckled, in gold—real metal threads, Avhich manage, in some marvellous Avay, to give a glittering effect without making the material stiff or heavy. There are endless combinations of silk and avool and many variations of tho aforesaid velvety surface.
“Annure,” a heavy plain silk, seems to be in for a revival. It is used only for coats and Avraps, and I have so far seen it chiefly in black, combined with beige fur. This very chic combination is still a favourite Avith smart women.
The lames are wonderful this year. They are more often patterned than plain—the latter are chiefly used for evening wraps and shoes. The patterns vary from plain ribbed and her-ring-boned designs to beautiful combinations of silk and metal. One of these, which is expected to have a great success, is printed in vivid colours on the wrong side of the silk, so that the pattern shoAA r s, as it Avere through a haze of gold.
