YOUNG VEAL EXPORT
QUESTION OF AMHBSIOS. $ EXPIANATION BY ; MINISTER. • Considerable doubt h»» eitated recently as to whether the importation into England of th e meat of young calves would be permited by the Home authorities during this season. Commenting on the matte? tfco other day, th e Minister of Agrtoolture (Hon. O. J. Hawken) aaid th&t last season a quantity amounttng t« about 150 tons of this class of meat was exported from New Zealand to the Old Country; but this year in* Government reeelved advice fro« tbe Home authorities contemplating prohibiting its import. Negottatlowi were immediately opened by cable' gram, and information has now- been received that for the last six moaths. of this year boneless veal, packed in a specified manner, will be looked upon as admissuble, but will b* inspected and admitted or rejected on rte merits. Referring to the question which would arise at the end of the yea*, at to th e continuance of the trade, the Minister stated that lie Govfnment expected to receive through the High Commissioner particulars of conditions which would hav e to be observed in that connection by exporters* "There are indications" concluded the Minister, "thai the Home authorities are not at all favourably disponed towards the admission of • very young veal, but if exporters will take care to see that only the very s best class of the meat Is sent, and that it is packed in the manner required, I am of the opinion that there la an opening for building up quite a considerable export trade out of what to the past has been largely a by-pro-duct of the dairy Industry In the Dominion." .... --ii^ajbi
