LOCAL UNEMPLOYED.
START MADE ON CEMETERY ROAD. ' In connection with the construction of the road' to the cemetery to be undertaken for the purpose of giving relict to local unemployed, the Town Cleik iit the Council meeting on luesctay evening .handed to the Council the names of 52 men who had applied ioi work on this road. Of this number -24 were married men with families ranging from one to setten dependent upon them, - Some of these men have been out of work for three months. \mong the 28 unmarried men, one Ox the number stated he had been out of work twelve months, while quite a number had been out of employment for two and three months. ; . The Mayor stated that he had linerviewed Mr Gagliardi that day as to whether the men would be able to start 'the following day! , The latter had informed him that it would be impossible to start on Wednesday,.as it was nec"ssafy that a foremari of works should be appointed, first, who. could go over the route with him to put in the pegs to the depth Of filling. After a perusal of the names submitted it was decided to offer the position of foreman to Mr. E. Extern at a wage of 15s -per dayIt was stated that. at least twenty men will be found employment on the undertaking. 'As,the full number will piobably- not be required until next week, twelve men were selected to start on the preliminary work, which commenced on . Thursday. These are all married men having the most dependants. The remainder of men will be selected by the foreman, who has been given instruction to use his own discretion- and give preference to those married men. with.one child. The rate j of pay is to''be 14s per day. Should , any .single, men be eniployed they are j to "receive "the same rate of pay.: It was decided to point out to the I foreman that as the Council are giving the ruling rate of wages, the men are expected to give .a fair clay's work. The f oreriian is 'also given power to dismiss any man who is unsatisfactory. It was further resolved that the Road Connvittee supervise the work, and that the Mayor and one of the committee visit the work each-day.
