SMOKE CONCERT TICKETS.
SALE HELD ILLEGAL. FARMERS SURPRISED. MORRINSVILLE, July 16. General disappointment was expressed by members of the Morrinsville branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union when it was announced at the monthly meeting that the smoke concert that had been arranged for farmers in the district could not be held on account of police regulations. The president, Mr J. Allen, said that it had been decided to sell tickets at 5s each, but the police had pointed out that such a proceeding was illegal if liquor was to be served. Presumably there was to be liquor. Captain F. Colbeek: Since when was the law passed? I have been present at numerous smoke concerts during the past two years, and have paid for admittance. I remember similar functions where Ministers of the Crown have been present. A Voive: That wouldn’t be any. special recommendation. (Laughter). A committee was appointed to inquire into ways and means of holding the smoke concert.
