DESTITUTE VICAR.
GETS PARISH RELIEF. Reduced to destitution through the working of the new Tithes Act, the Rev. W. O. Boyd, Vicar of Perranzabuloe, near Truro, applied for relief to the Truro Board of Guardians, of which he was formerly a member. Mr. Boyd explained that, though his stipend is £4OO a year, the only income he was certain of receiving by the end of the year was £lB 2s. He has a wife and two children to support, and probused to refund any relief granted. He was prepared, he said, to try his hand at stonebreaking, and had applied for a position as commercial traveller to tide over the difficult period. “It is a scandalous thing that a respected gentleman like Mr. Boyd should be placed in this position,” said Mr. A. E. Hobbs, a Labour member. “Why don't the rich clergy help their poor brothers in distress T”
It was decided to grant two guineas per week relief by way of a loan.
