ROAD TO CEMETERY.
RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT.
On Tuesday the. Mayor and Town Clerk visited Wellington for the purpose of urging matters in connection with raising the money to form and construct a road to the cemetery, which is primarily to give work to local unemployed . „ . A The visit was a satisfactory one and as a result a special meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening, those present being the Mayor (Mi E. Butt) and Crs. T. C. Thwaites, R. Downes, J. Curran, jun., and J. Curran, sen. The Mayor stated that the meeting was called to pass a resolution to borrow the necessary money, tlio said resolution to be submitted for confirmation to a special meeting of the Council to be held on the 2nd day of August, 1927, at 7.30 p.m. Also that any person haying any objection to the proposed loan be called upon to submit the same in writing to the Council not later than the day preceding the said meeting. • A letter was received from the Minister of Public Works stating that a report received from the District Engineer (Mr Ronayne) stated that 20 men at least could be employed on constructing the proposed road to the cemetery and that the estimated cost is £420. The Minister's letter states that if the Council proceeds with the work immediately with labour from the unemployed ranks in the borough, the Government will pay a subsidy of 50 per cent, on the expenditure on labour at Government relief rate of pay for relief workers (married men 12s per day, single | men 9s) provided such labour expenditure amounts to not less than 60 per cent, of the total cost, and plans and specification? are submitted to the District Engineer and the work completed to his satisfaction.
A resolution was proposed by Cr. Curran, jun., and seconded by Cr. Downes, “That the Council borrow a loan of £250 to be known as “ The Unemployment Loan of £250, 1927,'' for the purpose of forming and constructing a road to the cemetery. For .the purpose of providing for the repayment of the said loan, interest, and other charges, and a sinking fund of not less than two per centum per annum to appropriate and pledge as security a special rate of l-32nd of a penny in the £1 on' the rateable value of all rateable property in the Borough on the capital value. The t§rm of the loan to be for a period not exceeding ten years." This resolution will be confirmed at a special meeting in ten days' time. The Maypr in reply to a question as to when the work will likely to be commenced, stated that he did not think a start could be made until about next Wednesday- In the meantime, he would like all’men out of employment to hand in their names to the Town Clerk, as earlyla possible. ..
The Town. Clerk was instructed to write 4.0 :Mr^BP na y n .e (district ‘engineer) thanking him for the assistance he, has rendered the Council 'in this matter. -" ‘
