MAORI GUIDE HAS NARROW ESCAPE.
GROUND UNDERMINED BY BOILING STREAM. AUCKLAND, July 4. A serious subsidence in the path leading through the native reserve at Whakarewarewa occurred on Saturday afternoon, when Guide Edie had a miraculous escape from death. Edie was walking along the pathway a short distance from the entrance when the ground gave way; one leg went down into a cavity, but fortunately she drew herself back and escaped falling into a boiling stream disclosed beThe hole is several feet wide and 12ft deep, and as far as can be seen a large area in the vicinity is undermined. The pathway is used by thousands of tourists who go into the reserve. It is fortunate that Guide Edie was alone, for if a number of people had been together the fall of earth would have been more sudden and disaster surely would have resulted.
