YOUTH WHO PRECIPITATED WAR.
Doctor Pappenheim records: “Princip was a fanatic, but intcligent youth and mentally normal. He was born in 1894 and died on February 17, 191 G. His father was a peasant. Prinolp did not drink, was always in health and had no serious injuries until after the outrage. Then he had wounds on the head and wounds everywhere. “He had read many anarchist books, and when in the fourth form of a high school met a girl with whom he fell in love., “He was idealistic, never kissed the girl. nov( r wrote. He wanted to join the Balkan War in 1913, but was too weiik. Many Splendid Dreams. “Usually ho slept only four hours nightly. He u§ed to dream a' lot of tine, splendid dreams, but he never had nightmares. “The motive of the outrage was love and revenge for the Serbian people.” Dr. Pappenheim’s record continues: “A month ago Princip tried to hang himself with a towel. He had unhealed wounds on his chest and arm which were festering. I obtained permission to amputate the hand. Life Is Impossible.
y “He says: ‘A life .like mine is impossible. If the chance recurs I will try to commit suicide again.’ t
“He thinks of his parents with longing, hut he is allowed no news. He had no wish to be a hero. He could not believe a world war had broken out as the result of his deed." Dr. Pappenheim considers Princip sentenced as he was to solitary confinement for life, had nothing to hope for and no reason to conceal the truth though he sought to shield his accomplices, Gabrinovic and Grabez. How Idea Wag Bora.
Princip said that his first idea was to 'murder Baron Potiorek, Military Governor of Bosnia, but he heard in March that the Austrian- heir-ap-parent was coming to Serajevo. This seemed a chance. 4 - He discussed the scheme with several members of the Serbian Terrorist Society, one of whom was able to secure bombs.
He returned to Serajevo on May 26, 1914. Ho studied and read quietly the next few days. He was always buying more books.
In tolling Dr. Pappenheim the story Princip added: “That’s what makes it so terrible now, being allowed no books.”
Asked what would have been the best thing for the country PrinciP could not answer. He explained: “When I am alone everything is clear; but when I speak to another person I get uncertain. ‘'Serbia Is No More.” Perhaps the most tragic entry Is Prtncip’s cry W’hen told of Serbia’s downfall. He cried: “Serbia is no more. My Serbian people! Serbian people!” So died Princip in a dark cell, wracked by tuberculosis and festering -wounds, while the world was In convulsions due to his mad crime.
