DOMINION’S POPULATION.
REACHES MILLION AND A* HALF.
According to the latest monthly Abstract of Statistics, the total population of New Zealand at April 1, 1927, was 1,487,980, inclusive of 64,234 Maoris. With the inclusion of its overseas dependencies the' Dominion had, in round numbers, a population of a million and a half, the precise figures being 1,495,134. Since the census of April 20, 1920, the increase of population in New Zealand proper has been 29,841, equal to 2.1§ oer cent. Of this increase, approximately 57 per cent. was due to excess of births over deaths and 43 per cent to excess of arrivals over departures. Tlie estimated populations of provincial districts (inclusive of Maoris- at April 1, 1927, are as follow: — Auckland 484,346 Hawke’s Bay 71,703 . Taranaki 73,059 Wellington 287,959
