SHANNON ATHLETIC CLUB'S CARNIVAL.
OPENED LAST EVENING.
The above carnival organised by the Shannon Athletic Club to raise funds to carry out improvements. at the Domain opened last evening and will be continued this afternoon and evening, concluding on Saturday night. The attendance last evening was fair, the the returns being very satisfactory. A number of tastefully arranged stalls well loaded with useful articles and goods, under the supervision of the ladies attracted quite a lot of attention, while there is a shooting gallery, hoopla tables and other games at which one can test his skill. The chief attraction last evening was the tug-of-war for local teams. Four teams completed, all the bouts being closely contested, the final of which will be pulled this evening. The teams were:—East Road: Messrs W. Moynihan (capt.), O’Connor, Discoll, Roberts and McKenzie v. Town: Messrs J. T. Bovis (capt.), Tohi Brewer, Stewart and F. King, the former team winning both pulls. Tokomaru: Messrs A. Reed (capt), I. Williams, A. Williams, J. McNab and M. Moody v. Young’s team: C. Stern L (capt.), B. Robinson, F. Jamieson, W. Gray and C. Young. Tokomaru won the first and third pulls, in each instance by a narrow margin, and will thus pull off in the final to-night with East Road. A special attraction for this evening will be the contest between The “Low Tension” team, the lightweight chainpionjs of Palmerston North, and the “Limitods” the lightweight champions of Horowhenua,

Athletic Club’s: Mesdames Butt, Taylor, Bowler and Whibley. Farmers: Mesdames F. Jamieson, W. Easton, McKenzie and Gittings.
Bran Tub: Miss L. Kohika. Shooting Gallery : Messrs L. Satherley and T. King. Hoop-la: Mr Mclntosh,
During the evening the following competitions wore drawn: Hum, Mr J.v Hennessey; box of chocolates, Mr F. Thurston; guessing the name of ths Mystery Man, who'was “H. Whibley*’’ several guessed right, and in the draw off Mr J. T. Bovis won.
Jjne of the competitions at the Carnival is to guess the aggregate weight of His Worship the Mayor and the Town Clerk, and at nine o’clock on Saturday night these two gentlemen will be handcuffed at the hall and nnder a strong escort taken to the local railway station to be weighed. '
