SHANNON CEMETERY.

ROAD ACCESS REQUIRED. QUESTION TO BE GONE INTO. At the special meeting of the Shannon Council oh Tuesday evening, Cr. Thwaites stated that his attention had been drawn to the bad conditions which prevailed in wet weather in gaining access to the cemetery. He asked if something could not be done to improve the entrance. He knew of instances where visitors, who had wished to visit the cemetery, had been compelled to turn back owing to the wet state of the paddock which they had to pass through. Cr. Curran, senr., suggested that the Couneii endeavour to come to an agreement with Cr. Richardson to have the load formed and fenced off.

Cr. Spencer said he would go further, and ask Cr. Eichardson if he would allow the Council to form and metal the road and keep it in order, without fencing. Cr. Eichardson said that some years ago he had offered to come to a similar arrangement^with the Horowhenua County Couneii, but they had advised him that they could not spend money on private property, and the same thing applied to-day. He would not entertain cutting up his land by fencing, and he thought it unfair to ask him to consider it. In regard to Cr. Spencer's suggestion, if the Council would put it in writing he would consider it.

Cr. Thwaites: The Council have set down a rulf not to spend money on private property, therefore I do not see how we can in this instance.

Cr. Curran, junr., said the Council should put down their own road to the cemetery. He did not think it would cost as much as some thought. It was absolutely necessary and they should do it. He did not think it fair to ask Cr. Biehhrdson to let them form a road through his property. It had been good, of him to allow access through his property for so long. He said he thought that if the Horowhenua County Council was waited upon they would be only too willing to assist with the formation of the road. He suggested that they be asked to request their Engineer to give an estimate of the cost of the road free of charge. Cr. Gunning said they had got to get a road and they should set about getting one as soon as possible. He objected to metalling through private pro. perty. Cr. Curran, junr., moved and Cr. Hyde seconded: "That the Council go into the question of forming a new road to the cemetery and that the Horowhenua County Council be asked to what extent they would help in the matter. 'Die County Council also to be asked if they agree to their Engineer submitting cost of road and which he considers the best x route,'' On the motion being put to the meeting it was carried unanimously.

The Town Clerk was instructed to made enquiries as to obtaining a Government subsidy towards the work.
