SIMPLE RULES FOR BEAUTY

Health is the chief secret of good looks, and bound up with health is the necessity of getting as much fresh air a s possible, as much sunshine, and the right amount of exercise, writes a prominent London actress. Sleep is also a great bcautifier, and it is scarcely to be expected that a woman can keep her looks and -her youth if she burns the candle at both ends.' I must have S hours always, and occasionally after a tiring time I want more. I like to sleep as lpng as I can naturally and I do not like to be called before the eight hours arc up unless for something urgent. At the end of that time I am ready to got up and am ready for the day with no suggestion of nerviness or any “tired feeling.”

For exercise I like walking, and very often do four miles in a morning. I do a few physical exercises and think dancing excellent. I am in addition very fond of gardening, since it has so many advantages. It is exercise in the .fresh air, there "is plenty of stooping, which is supposed to be good for the figure, there is the interest of little green growing things, the smell of tli,e fresh soil, and the pleasure of it all. So far ns a holiday is concerned I like as hobbies fishing and sailing since I can manage a little yacht. I do not diet and am fortunate in that I am not very fond of sweets and am very keen on fruit and vegetables. My two young sons get plenty of fruit with nuts and orange juice. T am a believer in plain, good, wholesome English cookery, and all the bread in my house is home-made. I like home made cakes, too, and am averse to rechauffes and food that is reheated. Fresh uncooked food like salads and fruit is, to my mind, to he much commended for good looks and good health. Though modern clothes are so pretty and so adaptable, it seems to me to be a great mistake to be a slave to fashion. A woman should find a personality in dress and know which type it is that suits her without*its looking studied. The great generality of women are at their best when dressed in a true feminine style with soft materials and soft shades and colours rather than mannish clothes and Eton e>’ops. which only suit very decided types.
