USE OF IRONSAND.
AN AMERICAN PROPOSAL. A proposal from a man in San Francisco to establish a new process for the utilisation of ironsand came before the New Plymouth Harbour Board on Thursday. ’The Under-Secretary of Mines advised that the following cablegram had been received by the Minister of Mines from Copps, San Francisco: “Tested Plymouth sands furnished agent Smith by newly perfected process made superiod steel cost less than twelve dollars ton. Offer construct here and erect New Zealand complete demonstration plant supervising personallv. Your Government guarantee, not exceeding ten thousand dollars total cost expended supervision deoxidation melting. After method proven equitable contract to be arranged. Could leave fully equipped May, sailing Makura. Prompt reply requested. ’ The Minister had replied that the Government could nojt entertain the offer, but that he was referring the matter to the Harbour Boards interested. , . Oil the motion of the chairman (Mr. Bellringer) the board decided to reply that, while it would afford every facility to any company establishing works here, the board could not undertake any financial responsibility.
