LOCAL UNEMPLOYED.
A deputation of local unemployed married men, introduced by Cr. Hyde, waited upon the Town Clerk (Mr J. T. Bo vis) yesterday afternoon, requesting tnat relief be given to married men, it being estimated that there were about thirty married men who had been out of employment for the past five weeks. They asked that the Borough Council take steps immediately to have the work of constructing the road approaches to the new bridge put into operation. Mr Bo vis, in reply, said he would like to have, been given time to have the Mayor and Councillors present. However, in their absence he gave an account of the Borough Council’s attitude in the matter, stating that only last Thursday advantage had been taken by the Council to meet the engineers of the Public Works Department when they pointed out the urgency of the work being commenced. He said the Manawatuf Cpunty Council, who were carrying out the work to the approachesof the bridge on the Moutoa side, had been written to asking them to give preference to local unemployed where practicable. They had replied that the letter would be filed for future reference. Up to the present time no word lias been received .as to the commencement of the road approaches. He suggested that a member from the deputation be selected to - wait on the Borough Council this evening, Mr Williamson being appointed. The deputation thanked Mr Bovß and withdrew.
