Robinson, Chief Electrical Engineer at Mangaliao, said all parts of the area —J-lawke-s Bay, Wanganui, Wellington, and Wairarapa were linked up by the Public Works telephone and it was surprising to note by this means the different kinds of weather which might be prevailing at the same ..time in various parts of the area that was supplied with current from the hydro-electric works. “You might have beautifully fine weather here,” he said, “while over the ranges you would hear that the tops are being blown off of motor cars. By the time a light westerly gets to the other side, it is a howling gale, while a heavy southerly in Wellington will have spent its force at Shannon.”
