TEACHING RESPONSIBILITY
Here are some dicta evolved by a parent whose upbringing of her family- took as its great objective the development of responsibility. 1. Give a child pocket-money that is sufficient to include the purchase of certain, necessary accessories, such as gloves and subscriptions to games-clubs. If children spend the money on other things, it must mean that they have to suffer exclusion from -sports. 2. Do not lend money. Make the child wait for the next pay day to come' round. 3. Only allow a pet to be kept, provided the child looks after all its needs. If the* pet does not receive its food at the stated times, make it clear that the animal will have to go and live with someone w r ho will look after its wants conscientiously. 4. Make it a rule that those who bestow presents on birthdays and at Christmas, must receive in their turn some form of acknowledgement even if this be no more than a card. 5.-The cost of gifts given by a child must not be wholly defrayed, by the parent. As far as possible, teach a child to fashion its own gifts, utilising some hobby like fretwork or bead-weaving for the purpose. :
