BOROUGH COUNCIL'S LAST MEETING.

APPRECIATION OF THE MAYOR. At the conclusion of the Borough / Council business on Tuesday evening V Cr. Thwaites, addressing the Mayor - (Mr. E. Butt), said he would like to .; place on record the appreciation of Cra. \ of the courtesy and kindly interest and consideration shown them by His Worship the Mayor of any suggestion brought before him by councillorso, and also their gratification at the amity and H ", goodwill that had characterised theCouncil meetings under his jurisdiction. ; The Mayor, in returning thanks, said ■' that during the twelve months he had occupied the Mayoral chair, his duties had been a ploasure,. this being made so, by the harmonising way in which Councillors worked with him. In all ■ matters he-was largely guided by his councillors. In conclusion he again thanked them for their kind words. Cn. Spencer, in : endorsing the previous speaker's remarks, said it had been a ; pleasure to be associated with the pre- ''•■ sent '< Council. In his experience as a - ■ councillor he had not known such good feeling previously. They had done ' their duty well although they had to E.tand any amount of criticism. More Work in detail had been carried out by them than any previous Council. ; He would be pleased to see the Mayor retain office and many of the Councillors ■ were deserving of a seat on the Coun> cil. He, himself, would be pleased to serve again if the ratepayers would ,- have him. ( Cr. Downes said although it was his . first term on the Council, he always looked forward to the meetings with ■ ' pleasure. Differences, he said, biought out the best in councillors, and though ; they had slight differences there was. f no ill feeling. It would be a pleasure -. ; to him to come back and serve the Borough to his best ability for another ' term if desired. .' , f

, Crs Hyde- and Hook also spoke in sim* ilar strain to the previous speakers. Cr. Spencer, referring to the great^. '. assistance rendered by the Town Clerk- ■ (Mr. J. T., Bovis), said he was the main stay of the Council. Any < re- ■ ..- quest made to him was always received in a courteous manner and they were » fortunate in having such a capable ■ clerk. ' '

Mr Bovis, in thanking the Council, said that if he had done his duty he - felt satisfied. He wished them all success at the coming election. * < Complimentary remarks were also made to the Press.
