TOO MANY "SIXES"

HARD-HITTING BATSMAN. I>OMCE INTERVENE. LIVES ENDANGERED. * SYDNEY, March 25. An amusing incident occurred 1 on the Pioneer Oval, at Bathurst, on Monday, when police had to intervene and remonstrate with a batsmen who was hitting the leather with such a will that lives of participants in sport s on an adjoining ground were endangered.

The batsmen was Fred Shcehan, of Bathurst, and he was treating the bowlers with.contempt, slogging every delivery almost out of the ground While he was making his score to 84 ho hit seven sixes off the same bowler and every one went over the oval fence into , the adjoining ground, where St. Patrick's day sports were being held. So persistent did the hitting become that Police-Inspector Leary, who was on duty in the adjoining ground, came on to the field, and advised Shcehan to "cut out putting the ball into St. Patrick's sports." The inspector said that many of the people in the next ground had had narrow escapes from being struck by the ball. Shcehan resented the intervention of the inspector, and told him he thought he was exceeding his duty. The inspector, however, warned him, and then left the ground.

The other players and spectators were nonplussed, and could only look on at the unusual incident. The occurrence seemed to upset the batsman, who was bowled two overs later when he had reached 96. He hit no more "sixes."
