ROAD CONSTRUCTION WORK.
Main Highways. County Engineer's Report. The County engineer (Mr. W. N. Anderson) reported to the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday as follows, regarding Main Highways work carried out during the past month: — No. 1 Highway. Waikanae—Otaki Section. Good progress is still being made with the earthwork on this section. Widening and filling is practically completed and shoulder work is well in, hand. The foundation consolidation has been completed to Otaki bridge. Considering the very broken weather during the past fortnight and the nonarrival of bitumen, the bitumen gang has made good progress, having laid 21 miles of pavement since last meeting. If the weather continues fine, the paving will be completed to the Otaki bridge within the next eight or ten days. Otaki —Manakau Section. A start was again made with the earthwork oh this section, a small gang being engaged on the deviation south of the concrete overhead railway bridge. No. 2 crusher has • been shifted into the Waitohu pit and a start made with the consolidation work between Otaki railway and Taylor's. It is hoped, if ' the weather permits, to complete the paving of this sub-section before closing down for winter. Tenders were called for the deviation .through Mr. D'Ath's property, but-on-ly one tender has been received. It is intended to take the land" required for deviation through Mr. Be- ; van's property, under the Public Works Act. The survey has been made and the plans are now ready for depositing. It is hoped to make a start with the deviation immediately. No. 60 Highway. Pott's Creek—North Boundary Wirokino Riding. The survey of this section has been completed, and plans etc., are well in hand and should be ready for approval within the next two weeks! North Boundary Wirokino RidingShannon Section. The survey work is nearing completion. ''■ t Shannon—Makerua Station Section. . Good prgress is 'still being made withthe earthwork on this section;-.the widening and shoulder work being practically finished from Shannon boundary to Miranui mill,'a.distance of two miles. Tokomaru Bridget—North Boundary of County. The plans, etc., of this section have now been approved, and a,start will be made with the earthwork at the beginning of next week. The report was adopted.
