MAIN HIGHWAY THROUGH BOROUGH.

THE QUESTION OF SUBSIDY FOR <, CONSTRUCTION. With reference to the question .of boroughs' vith a population of 50C0 and under, obtaining a subsidy from the Main Highways Board for construction of main highways through Boroughs, the .Town Clerk stated on Tuesday evening that since last Council meeting, when 28 boroughs replied supporting the action of the Council and offering to assist in the required object, more similar replies have been received, also a letter from the member for the district, Mr J. Linklater, M.F., advising that from what he could learn from those who ought to know, Parliament will not meet before the 25th June. He advised that any deputation to the Minister asking for ''subsidy for construction of main hig\ways through Boroughs with a population of 5000 and under'" be postponed until Parli-tmejit meets. All the members interested in this question will then be in Wellington and'there should be no difficulty of getting together quite a formidable deputation to wait on the Minister. On Monday evening His Worship the Mayor (Mr. E. Butt) and Crs. Thwaites and Downea met and considered the replies received from the local j bodies interested.

After all the replies had been dealt with, it was resolved that it be a recommendation to the Council meeting that a letter be sent, to all the local bodies forwarding to them the contents cf Mr. J. Linklater's letter, and suggesting that it would be advisable to hold the proposed deputation over until Parliament meets, which will be some time in June, also that the various local bodies appoint the member for their district to represent them on the deputation in conjunction with any other delegates which they cave to send. The names of the members are to be forwarded to Mr Linklater, who will take the matter up with the members of Parliament. The local bodies to be advised of any further development. The action of the Committee was confirmed. _
