SHANNON SCHOOL COMMITTEE
MONTHLY MEETING. The above meeting was held in the schoolroom on Wednesday evening. Present: Messrs R. L- Tippler (chairman), W. Brown. W. Lankshear, J. Bowler, C. Cronquest, A. Blackwood, J. Roberts (secretary) and A. T. White (headmaster):. From G. R. Powell, supervisor of School BuiHings, \eplying to letter from Committee re septic tank, stating that the Board is still awaiting the Department's re-ply to its letter. From assistant secretary re subsidy from Department for swimming baths on school property, stating that the Department in approved cases will provide a subsidy of £1 for £1 up to £2OO for the initial cost of construction) providing the conditions of their use by the general public are approved by the Board. A petition was received from M'angaore parents, who have children attending the Shannon School, Levin, High School and Palmerston North Technical School asking that better provision be made'for transporting the children from Mangaore tc Shannon. At present children living three miles and over ! from Shannon School, have to walk distances varying from one to 2| mibs to and from the Those attending Levin and Palmerston schools have to catch the 7.40 snd 9 a.m. trains respec lively, returning by the 2.40 and 4.30 p.m. trains. From to-day no provision is made for transport for these children to and from Shannon, except by the courtesy of the P.W.D. as mentioned later. They petitioned that the bus be still made available for the children catching the 9 a.m. and returning by the 2.40 p.m. trains, and further that 'in the interests of all children that the bus start from and return to the gate at entrance to Man gaore village. In support of the last request it was pointed out that when the bus ran to the gate at Mangaore a shelter was provided for the children in? view of the fact that the rainfall for the past twelve months averaged 495 points per month and the number of wet days per month was 17.6. It was decided to forward the petition to the Education Board, pointing out that the Committee considers that the petition is justified, also to draw attention to their previous appeal, trusting that tin Board will accede to the request. Mr Blaelrwood, in reporting on the recent school picnic held at Plimmerton, said that it had been a success and hs thought all had enjoyed themselves. The assistance rendered the Committee by the teaching staff and others had been a great help; while the conduct of the children 'had been splendid. Referring to the visit :,o see the Duke and Duchess, he said he would like to compliment the children on the manner in which they had behaved, as at no part of the day did they give any trouble, and he had felt very pleased with the way they had conducted themselves. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the teaching staff and all others who had assisted at the picnic.
The headmaster (Mr A. T. White) reported that the attendance since the school opened was as follows:—3ls, 314, 317, 324 and 319 with a roll number of 357. He stressed the need for better attendance, pointing out that the attendance was now below that re quired for the School's grade. The average attendance for last year was 329.
