SPENDING £1,000,000 A YEAR | i TEN MILLION ACRES INVOLVED Proposals are under consideratoin by the Minister of Immigration in Canada for the Expenditure of £1,000,000 annually for Immigration and colonisation. The chief immediate object is the settlement of 10,000,000 acres of Crown lands in the three Prairie Provinces within 15 miles of the railway. One million acres are situated in Saskatchewan three in Manitoba and six in Alberta. To overcome the pioneer difficulties the Minister proposes to advance £2OO to the native Canadians and £IOO to immigrants as loans until the begin to produce. Possibly, further loans repayable in ten years will be made j where the improvements to the pro- ) perty justify them. i Local committees to advise upon j the suitability of the land offered for J settlement and the advances -which i can safely be made to settlers will be formed.. Provision will also be made to assist the Provincial Governments j which 'may desire to take advantage of the plan outlined. Any Provincial ; Government not possessing Crown lands will be assisted to acquire lands and the Federal Government will assume one half the interest charges on such lands bought by the Provinces for settlement purposes.
