JAMITO DEFEATS JANSEN. IBVA-NS ■ WINS ON A FOUL FROM POTBURY,. Salvio Jamito (Philippines) defeated Raymond Jansen (France) in a boxing contest for" a purse of £l5O at Palmerston on Saturday night. The match lasted for 15 rounds, and the boxers, particularly Jansen, did not appear to extend themselves until the fight wan well advanced. In the lest few rounds, however, there was a scene of great excitement in the Opera House, as blow followed blow in quick succession. In the closing stages of the last round, the boxers stood practically toe to toe in the centre of the ring, and each tried hard v/ith both gloves to get the other off his feet, bu«t without success. The decision of the referee (Mr G. Watchorn), in awarding the fight to Jamito, was received enthusiastically. During the evening, the Mayor of Palmerston (Mr F. J. Nathan) introduced Artie Hay, who issued a challenge to the winner of the Jamito- Jansen match. The star amateur bout of the evening was expocted to be the meeting of Roy Pf.tbury and Jim Evans, tut what promised to a very willing go was nipped in the bud just after the beginning of the second round). Potbury had been warned twice in the first for hit- \ ting with the glove open, and following i another warning in the second was disqualified and, amid considerable noise the fight went to Evans. The-in-cident was unfortunate but in such cases there is only one decision allowed and that is the one given by the referee.
