SATURDAY'S CRICKET.

NORTH-SOUTH TRIAL GAME. WIN FOR THE SOUTHERNERS. Considerable interest centred in the match on Saturday at the Levin Domain, for the Northern and Southern representatives were pitted against each other in view cf the selection of th; Horowhen.ua team to play Manawatu en Saturday week. In striking contrast to the previous match of a similar nature, played some time ago, the form displayed on Saturday was vastly superior to that seen on the former occasion. This chiefly applies to the batting of the southern men, several of whom displayed excellent form while at the wickets, and it is safe to say that had it net been for the failing light and pressure of time, South's total would have been" well past the 200 mark. On the other hand the Northern men's batting lacked enterprise through out, and they n-.ade it appear very difficult to secure runs, and with the South's field placed for Siever's off theory, several fell victims to smart catches by O'Connor off that bowler. Hunt was just getting into his stride with the bat when he succumbed to the Sievers—O'Connor combination. McKenzie played stubbornly for his ?8 when badly needed, and, with the as- . sistance of Auckram and Newth, enabled the Northern men to reach the total of 114.. South replied with 182 for nine wickets, passing North's total with only four wickets down;. Pringle batted Avith his uesual confidence, while Bull displayed rare" accuracy in picking his scoring shots, his innings being the best yet seen from this player. O'Connor, always a rapid scorer, lived up to his reputation and treated the bowlers with scant courtasy, knocking a six and three fours off one over from Emmett. Following are the details: — NORTH.
