A SEASIDE PROJECT

ACCESS TO THE HYDEKABAD. NEW BOAD TO PBQMOTE FABMING AND BEACH SETTLEMENT. A preliminary survey has been made i for a road which will give access to the 1 Hokio beach about half a mile to the 1 north of the Hyderabad wreck, a ren- ) dezvous which at present is reached by ! a somewhat roundabout route either up | the beach from Hokio or across counI * r y- ' , I The new road is intended to open up l farming land and at the same time may lead to the establishment of another beach settlement. The direct route to the Hyderabad will then be from the Levin-Foxton road via the Waitarere road, which leaves the former highway near Poroutawhao. The distance to be roaded to connect the Waitarere road w T ith the beach is about two miles and a half, and it is hoped to have the construction under way before next summer. A request for the County Council's interest was made by the Hon. Ed-w-ard Newman last year, and as a result of his representations the following recommendation of the Works Committee w r as agreed to: “That provided the several parties interested are prepared to enter into a legal covenant to pay all costs incidental to the taking of necessary land for the proposed road under the Public Works Act, this Council undertakes to take the necessary

steps under the Act, provided further

that in consideration of these steps being taken by the Council, the several parties interested do also covenant that they will indemnify the Council against all claims for land taken and for forming and metalling the road." The plan was forwarded to the Holowhenua County Council meeting on Saturday by Messrs Park and Adams, solicitors, acting for the Hon. Mr •Newman, whose land is crossed by the route of the proposed road. The other owners interested agree to the conditions laid down by the Council. The Chairman (Cr Monk) stated that the Finance Committee had been on a portion of the suggested route and had a fair knowledge of it. He suggested that the plan be referred to the committee for perusal, with power to act. This course was agreed to.
