DRAIN OR PIT?

OTAKI MAORI RACING CLUB'S REQUEST. WORK REQUIRED AT RAHUI ROAD At the meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday, a request .was received from the Otaki Maori Racing Club for the cleaning of the drain running on the southern side of the Rahui road. The Chariman (Cr. Monk) said he did not know what responsibility thej Council had there, but if there was to be any advantage to the Racing Club, it should share the responsibility with the Council. If the work was not necessary to the County's road at present, he did not know that they need take any action. Cr. Ryder stated that the Racing Club for a number of years had borne the whole cost of cleaning this drain, which was on the side of the road. He „ believed it was dug by the old Otaki Road Board to form the road. The Chairman said that in that case it was not a drain, and the Board should have left part of the earth across it. ! Cr. Ryder said he thought the spoil from the drain went, to making the road. The Chairman: Has the Club cleaned it out in recent years? Cr. Ryder: Yes. The Chairman: I suggest that you meet their representatives, together with the engineer, and I will go with vou and discuss it on the ground. Cr. Catley: They are opening, up a very big question, and we shall have individuals coming to us to clean drains Which strictly are not drains. Spoil was taken from them to make the road, and now they will want to come on the local body to repair them. We cannot stop them from putting water in them, because we have no by-laws. The Chairman: This drain was dug purely for the purpose of getting material to make the road. The local body having made a pit, it is quite likely that the Racing Club has made a drain of it. Cr. Ryder: I don't think so. The Chairman: It was a channel dug for the purpose of getting spoil. It xs . an advantage for the Racing Club to have a drain there. Cr. McLeavey: Is it any good to the road to have a drain there? Cr. Ryder: Most certainly. It could not do without it. The matter was left in the hands of Cr. Ryder and the engineer, with power to act.
