At New Plymouth on Saturday morning;, states the News, Flying Shot and Billikins went a mile together, covering the last half in slJsetj. E. George sent Royal Mint, Hipo, and Mint Leaf over six furlongs in lmin. 19sec, the trio finishing together. Quillfire and Always covered a half mile in 54sec. Silvermine dashed over five furlongs in lmin. 2£sec, doing it on the bit. Mr. Alexander's two-year-old is in the pink of condition at present. The Limited—Molleen Oge filly in Percy Johnson's stable in Taranaki is now in regular work, and in looks should be a worthy representative of her sire. She is an exceptionally well quartered youngster, and when associated with Income in pace work on Saturday, moved very attractively. On Saturday morning Alan McCormac, the Hawera jockey, met with an unfortunate accident that will keep him out of the saddle for a week or two. While he was working Bevis on the Hawera track the horse became unruly, and McCormac had the bad luck to have his foot severely crushed on the rail.
There were some people (states a Hawke's Bay writer), who thought Raukauponga unbeatable at Gisborne, while others thought the same about Sandburn and Carniola - in the same race. Not one of the three, however, ran into a place. Paperchase has not done much work since she returned to Riccarton from Trentham. She looks in good health, however. She will probably be in the field for the Middle Park Plate at Riccarton this month.
Fresco has been on the easy list since he raced at Trentham. He has freshened up nicely, and he may be seen out again in the Midsummer Handicap at the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting. Hyperion has been working along well lately on the Riccarton tracks. G. J. Pine is not hurrying him, however, and though he may have a few races on the flat in the autumn he is being prepared specially with a view to competing over hurdles in the winter. The Polymenian is reported to be going on nicely in his preparation at Riccarton, and so far he is quite sound. He has"had a few'short- and he is gradually getting into racing shape. The seven-year-old gelding Scorn (by Clareneeux from Disdainful) has rejoined G. Murray Aynsley's team at Riccarton. He was a promising three-year-old but he has been off the scene since then.
N. C. Dvvyer, an apprentice jockey who was injured at the Tapanui race meeting on February 2, died "on Tuesday night in the Tapanui hospital.
