Such is not. the case. The fares are paid by the Committee, who are charged 2s per child by the Railwav Dept, and it is to find this money that the subscription lists have been put into circulation, therefore, to enable the children to have an outing at the seaside it behoves all residents to assist the committee by subscribing to the fund.
At a meeting of ladies held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday aftc •- noon, Miss A. E. J. Spencer, chairwoman of the I-lawkes Bay Provincial Federation of Women’s Institutes, gave an interesting address on the underlying aims of such institutes, duiing the course of which she stated that each individual Women’s Institute is an association of all the women in its area, without distinction of positon, education, or worldly goods. Meetings are held once a month, when matters of interest to them all are discussed, and a previously arranged programme is carried through. The programme includes, as far as possible, something educational, as a lecture or talk on literature, science, home economy, health, or some question of the day; something practical, as a demonstration of a handicraft, a household process, and social items. She said the Institutes are. essentially democratic in constitution, and are* strictly non-sectarian and non party. The institutes help in al 1 that promotes the general good of their neighbourhood and members loam to take an interest in larger affairs. The Levin Co-operative Dairy Com | pany will pay out 1/3 per lb. of butter j fat for cream of the highest grade supplied during January. This is the sa..m figure as the advance for the previous month. A solitary ray of humour flashed through the gloom of the Supreme Court at Palmerston on Tuesday, when His Honour said to a witness from Levin, “You did not connect Providence with dairy farming yourself, did you!” The witness replied, with an air of conviction, that he could not associate the two. In former years persons wishing to re-liceilse motor vehicles have been put to much inconvenience and delay owing to the limited time allowed, and -the consequent rush to obtain licenses. To avoid this inconvenience the Postal Department is now issuing plates for the year Ist April, 1927, to 31st March, 192 S It. is quite impossible at most Post Offices to provide the extra facilities necessary to meet the heavy demand usually arising at the last moment, and those requiring lieensc-s for the year 1927-28 would save themselves annoyance by procuring licenses at the earliest possible moment. It will be compulsory, under a heavy penalty to have the proper plates affixed on the Ist April, and it is likely that this regulation will be strictly enforced this year.
