Little difficulty has been experienced by the Auckland City Treasurer this year in collecting rates. On Saturday which was the last day of grace before the imposition of the 10 per cent, penalty on all outstanding rates, the staff was exceptionally busy, about £IOOO being received through the post alone. Over a period of ten days, ending on Saturday, more than £IOO,OOO was received, or an average of £IO,OOO a day. This year the amount collectable is over £400,000, as compared with about £380,000 last year, yet the amount outstanding on Saturday was £19,000 less than it was at the corresponding time in 1926. The.amount collected in the past five days was greater than the total rates collected for the whole of the financial year 1902-3.
