KARA STREAM EELS.

MAORIS MAKE BIG HAULS. The eels caught in the Kara Creek at Shannon are, according to the -Maoris, the best flavoured in New Zealand, hence a party of Maoris have been very busy, lately, catching them near Mr Hibbell’s property. The Maoris have ■com*' from as far away as the Waikato to obtain their supplies. They have a very effective wav of catching the eels. The fishermen go into the river armed with spears and drive the eels down stream to where a huge net is spread across the river. When the eels are netted a horse is hitched on to the net to pull the haul of fish in. Hundreds of sacks of eels have been netted lately, and after they have been dried and smoked, will be sent away. It is stated that quite a good price is being obtained for the tunas.
