A bankrupt fanner, 79 years of age, told his creditors at Auckland that his age had prevented him from working his farm profitably.

A large car, returning from the Wellington races, ran foul of an electric light post at Taita on Saturday and snapped it in half. The car was badly damaged, the wheels and mudguards being torn off. When the police raided the King George Hotel, Christchurch, on the evening of December 11 last the licensee John • Coffey, instead of admitting the officers when they came to the door, went back to warn a number of men who were in the bar after hours (says a Christchurch correspondent. Yesterday Coffey was fined £lO for selling liquor after hours and £2 for dolaying the police. The barman, William O'Loughlin, was fined £3 for supplying liquor after hours, and the patrons of the bar were lined £1 each for .being illegally on the premises. The police stated that entrance was barred by a chain attached to the door.

Remits dealing with hawkers have been forwarded by the Auckland City Council for consideration at the forthcoming conference of the Municipal Association of New Zealand, to be held in Palmerston North next month. The proposals are that the law be so amended as to prohibit hawkers and pedlars from plying their trade, either in any part or the whole of a local authority's district as the council may determine; to decline to grant any hawker or pedlar a license except on a recommendation from the chief officer of police ■of the district; and to allow a hawker or pedlar being charged a license fee not exceeding £5 per annum in lieu of £1 as at present.
