RIVER COMMISSIONS FINDINGS

MANAWATU COUNTY'S POSITION. A PROTEST ENTERED. The Manawatu County Council briefly reviewed the Commission's findings at yesterday's meeting, when Cr J. "Boyce expressed the opinion that the allocation made by the Commission was most unjust as far as the ratepayers in the County were concerned The. findings of the Commission really amounted to three separate additional rates. The Manawatu County's allocation amounted to about £IO,OOO, whilst a further £SOOO was allocated between the Moutoa and Sluggish River Drainage Boards, both of which bodies were represented by the ratepayers in the County. This amounted to three separate rates on the rate-payers of * the county, should the scheme be proceeded Avith. He suggested calling a conference of the local bodies concerned with a view to protesting against the allocations. Every action was desirable as the Minister'may approve of the scheme and then the Council would have no say.

Councillors agreed that the allocation was unsatisfactory and on the motion of Crs Boyee and Fagan, it was decided to register an emphatic protest against the County's assessment.
