MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
At this week's meeting of the Manawatu County Council the following matters, were dealt with: — _ HIGHWAY. In connection with the Foxton-Shan-non Highway, a letter was received from the Public Works Department pointing out that the Highways Board was of the opinion that the direct route if possible should be adopted and recommended the Council to proceed with the necessary legislation. THE SHANNON PCJNT.
On the subject of the Council making charges for the use of the Shannon punt, the Board had no objection to this between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., but the Board would not subsidise operation costs during these hours.
The County Clerk submitted the following schedule of charges:—Foot passengers, 6d each; horse and lider, Is each; vehicle and ona horse, Js 6d each; every additional horse, 6d each; cars (private)., 1/6 each'; service cais, charabanc or lorry, 2s each ,- except ions, doctors in cases of sickness and councillors and officials on duty, i
The Council resolved to inspect the site of the new highway from Foxton to Shannon and approved of the schedule of charges in regard to the use of the punt at night. Complaints as to -.he unsatisfactory working of the ferry were dealt with in committee. WHIROIi'INO JJiiIDUE. In regard td 1 maintenance work on the Whirokino Bridig..', the Public Works Department notified that of the £2OO (£1 for £1); authorised on October 29th last, £SO (£1 for £1) was for the maintenance and ri-pair of the bridge. The chairman (Cr. Barber) pointed out that the £SO was allocated for painting the irpn work on the bridge. It was decided to arraiig-; for this work to be undertaken during the summer months.
