This summer we shall see prettier hats than we have seen for a long time. The delicate crinolines, with their wide, fluted brims, themselves suggest flow-ers, and are to be seen in all the colours of flowers, particularly rose and foxlove, and in loveliest of leaf greens. A rose pink crinoline hat worn at a dress show with a pink lace frock was trimmed under the brim with I’ose petals. One or two very large roses ,or poppies are favourite trimmings; often they weigh down the brim on one side, and just'touch the shoulder. Hand-painted organdie flowers give a delightfully light touch that blends perfectly with the essentially “summery" hat. Chiffon velvet of the softest and most pliable quality is used "as a border to some of the crinoline’ hats, and velvet "streamers" are occasionally seen. Most of these picturesque models are of only moderate width in the brim, though they seem large to us after our long spell of devotion to the small hat. Occasionally a really large hat is seen, one that recalls a longago summer somewhere before 1914, but it is not a genuine success, for the Crock that accompanies it is too short und the wearer, however charming, looks “over-hatted.” The newest wide-brimmed models have notably high supple crowns, with the brim sometimes almost flat, somei. times slightly cloched. The beret crown is a tremendous favourite in Paris, but not in exaggerated form, and it is introduced on to the picture shapes. Very little trimming is introduced, but'the hat itself is made of uncommon straw, or a clever mixture of straw, ribbon and dyed raffia.
