PEOPLE'S PICNIC.

TO-MORROW AT THE DOMAIN. New Year’s Day promises to be one of the outstanding days of the year so far as Shannon is concerned; especially in view of the enthusiastic way in which the many events for the natives are being taken up for the People’s 'Picnic at the Domain. To plait a basket from flax and peel potatoes: to fill it, in record time will demonstrate to the pakelia housekeeper what can be done by the modern Maori girl. The haka and poi dances competitions have many entries; some have come from a long distance, but the Manawatn lean's are confident and hope to hold the shields. The Manawatu Pipe Band will arrive by the 7.40 a.m. train and will play at 10 a.m. at the Post Office, afterwards leading the procession to the grounds. These big men in kilts and the Maoris in their war mats i should make a striking picture. Twenty-five events have been arranged for the children together with races for young women and men, and mum and dad have not been forgotten. The paddling poo 1 and the side shows, will certainly attract the children, and the big tea rooms that arc being erected should make things corfortable for those wh i do not care to bring a basket. The committee have worked hard and have done everything possible to make the day a happy one.
