PROBLEM FOR A JUDGE
NOTHING TO DO WITH LAW. A MODEL MODERN CITY. . A pretty little problem has been set Mr Justice Alpers, says a Christchurch paper. It is not an involved lawsuit He will not require to settle It from his scat on the supreme Court Bench. .Apparently the Only way to solve the problem will be foi the Judge to remove his coat., dig a long, long drain , and place pipes in the bottom of it. s Mr Justice Alpers owns a hut in an attractive little colony at the m'outh of the Rakaia River, where, apparently, sanitation does not come up to the expectations of the health officer. The Ellesmere County Council has control of the huts, and in accordance with the instructions ol the health officer it has sent a circular letter to each hut owner requesting that drainage improvements be attended to.
'ln an amusing reply to the. conn oil’s letter, Mr Justice Alpers points out .that drainage in Christchurch was not exactly perfect. He writes. "I will erect a fence to your approval when I am- down for the Christmas holidays. As to drainage, I am really at a loss to understand What I do. I desire, of course, to comply with the health officer’s ■requisitions, but. I do not know what course I can pursue. Washhouse drainage rails into side channels in Christchurch, right under the health officer’s nose. For 15 years T drained mine into the Wairo r a.pa stream, as did all other ‘riparians,’ with the consent of the Christ church Drainage Board, and with the full knowledge, of the Health Department. . ■!
"Tbit it is evident the health people arc determined to have ‘Hutville’ a model modern city. No doubt, the road will be tar-sealed if rmt lrtuminised, so as to lie in keeping with these other perfections of* town-planning. I will give myself tbe- pleasure of, calling upon you when I go through, and perhaps you can help me to solve the puzzle.’
