BEAUTY IN SPECTACLES

EVELYN LA YE OFFERS SOME HINTS. ON THE SELECTION OF SPECTACLES. - The first thing 1 the spectacled girl has got to do is to make up her mind not to be self-conscious about her glasses, writes Evelyn Laye, the talented stage beauty, in “The Daily Sketch." , 1 . There are some girls who are really improved by wearing glasses. They gain a distinction which is otherwise lacking.

You remember how, a few years ago, when tortoiseshell or horn-rim-med became fashionable, lots of girls who really didn’t need glasses at all adopted them just to be in the fashion.

They must have thought them attractive in some way, considering the amount of masculine ridicule they braved on their account.

As a matter of, fact, I thought, and still think, them rather attractive myself..... So if you have to wear glasses, tell yourself you are one of those whom glasses suit. Of course you must see to it that your glasses do suit you as much as possible. Don't, because you've got to have them, think that one pair of glasses is as good as another. Make the man who, serves' you understand that you don’t intend your glasses to be; merely a disfigurement to be borne with as much fortitude as possible. f , ' Study everything about your face —its contour, the shape and size of your eyes and nose, your colouring, and so forth—and choose yo\jr glasses accordingly. Here are some tips that will help you. They were given to me by a clever optician. Dark horn-rimmed spectacles make a large, round face look smaller and thinner. ’ Light-rimmCd glasses make a thin face look plumper. If the eyes are small, large , lenses will make them look bigger. If the nose is too large to be, 1 in harmony with the rest of# the features large lenses'will give it the appearance of being more in proportion, i , Similarly, small lenses fhake a small nose look larger. ; The position of the bridge attachment between the lenses should be studied. A low bridge attachment will shorten the nose, while if it is high it makes the nose appear longer. The seoond point applies more to dark-rimmed glasses. If the face is plump the side pieces should be, as inconspicuous as possible. Dark, thick side pieces will improve a long, thin face. Personally I should always advise spectacles in preference to pincenez. For' one thing, pince-nez are rather out of date, and one should be above all things in the fashion, as far, as possible, with spectacles. ,■/.

Another point my optician mentioned,' that I forgot to' give _ above, is that convex lenses (that is, lenses which curve slightly outwards, away, from the eyes) are much more comfortable, as well as more becoming. There is not the same danger of looking over the; tops of the lenses if they are curved to: the face, and they are less conspicuous, naturally. Having chosen your glasses, then, there’s one thing more you’ve got to make up your mind about. This is, that whatever your, natural type may be, from now on you must live up to your glasses, which means that ybu must noth in any way, allow yourself to be fluffy or kittenish.

You may be as fair and small and dollish as possible, but if you have to wear glasses you must somehow contrive to have an air of dignity. You may be piquante, yes. Sometimes glasses give a girl a piquante air, but fluffiness —-never..,

Therefore, study your whole ensemble if you must' wear glasses. Adopt a neat style of dressing and coiffure- —the smarter the better, but always neat and quiet (in fact, these are the essentials of all smartness to-day), and let your manner be in keeping.
