“YOU DIRTY DOGS.” v ‘ LONDON, Dec. 1. An unfortunate incident occurred in the closing stages of the game at*St. Helen’s. Ellaby eluded Gardiner and scored a try which Gardiner disputed with the.touch judge, whom he struck. The referee immediately ordered Gardiner off. The latter, when interviewed, admitted striking the blow, but declared that the- incident was entirely due to the touch judge using an insulting expression. The touch judge refused to make a statement. The League authorities are inquiring into the incident.. Gardiner, interviewed, said: “The touch judge signalled a try when Ellaby crossed. I disagreed and said so. The judge said, ‘Keep your eyes open you dirty dogs.’ I lost my temper and struck him. ’ ’
The\“ Daily Mail” says Gardiner Avas disinclined to leave the -field. He and the referee went off arm in arm amid cheers.
