RAILAGE FREIGHTS.
♦—: PALMEESTON N., Dee. ,9. That the deputation which waited upen the Bail ways Board in protest against the reducton made recently in long-distance railage freights on dairy produce had received a good hearing, although he was doubtful whether the pretest was going to bear fruit, was reported by Mr S. A. Broadbelt, who presided at to-day's meeting of the Manawatu and West Coast Dairy Companies' Association. Communications have passed between the Board and the Association in regard to this matter consequent upon the disapproval expressed by the association in regard to the freight reductions' on the ground that it allowed unfair competition. The latest advice from the Board is tc the effect that the request of the Association that the rates apply to export produce only cannot be acceded to. Upon the chairman's report being received, Mr P. Hansen remarked tha; the Railways Board seemed concerned with obtaining freight rather than produce. In describing the tariff as unfair, tlw chairman said that he had told the directors of his dairy company that they ivould have to put the produce on thu road unless they received better consideration.
