Shopping Week in Levin has aroused a great deal of comment outside Levin from .Foxton to Paekakariki and from this point of view alone must-be conceded as the best advertising campaign ever undertaken locally. In Otaki it occasioned such a stir that the business people are taking counter measures. Practically every business man in the town (says the' "Mail") was presen: at a meeting held at the Lyric rooms on Monday "light, ;wlu-n :i free and a full discussion took place relative to the boosting of Otaki. Mr If. J. W'yatt presided, and throughout the utmost interest was evinced. He explained that the meeting was the outcome of a talk only that morning, when a suggestion was made that a carnival week should be held. By doing so trade could, be .'infracted to Otaki. Mr Wyatt then invited suggestions, and a round-the-table talk resulted. It. was agreed that something should be done to hold trade in their midst. The general opinion was that a "spotting" week should be held, each business man to exhibit something in his window foreign to his business, and that Che person guessing the majority be awarded a prize. Handsome prizes avo to be offered, the town decorated and efforts made generally to hold Otaki's trade.
The Auckland Primary Schools Committees Association has decided to ask the Director of Education to take steps lo have cursive' writing taught in all schools from Standard I. upwards. The *eh airman said that no reference en the subject appeared in the regulations, which was a glaring weakness, and it i was left to the teacher to give iustrue- , tion or omit it altogether. Business men, especially banking firms,-are not agreed that the print script style of handwriting-should be encouraged. Some institutions object so strongly that they will not engage a boy -who writes print I script.
In giving judgment for £9B 2s Gel and costs against a motor car driver who dimmed his headlights in passing a motor bus and knocked down a pedestrian, who claimed £204 for injuries sustained, Mr MeKcan, S.M., at Auckland, said: "If a driver dims his headlights, and" proceed? along the highway when unable, to sjc whether the, path is clear, he cannut say h« is keeping a careful look-out. The practice of dimming, headlights may be a driving courtesy but it is. a dangeroue one that may be followed by disastrous results. "•
It happened in the Square (says the Pahnerston Times). , The young lady iii question approached the corner gaily on her bicycle, shot her arm out suddenly/ to the left and turned sharply to the right, ,thereby nearly causing a collision. In complete bewilderment the reporter hastily dismounted from his machine. VMy dear young lady," he had tl'e courage tu stammer, "ycu put out your wrong hand." "Well, you didn't know, which way I was going," was the quick retort. Quite so. The reporter resumed -his interrupted ride seriously pondciiug the ways of a woman. :
