SATURDAY'S CRICKET.

SMALL SCORING IN NORTH v. SOUTH. # ’ After an even game, the Northern representatives defeated the Southern men, on Saturday on the Levin Domain, by the -narrow margin of seven runs. The game was remarkable for the low scoring by both sides, and the totals of 71 and 78 respectively, was hardly in keeping with the occasion. It must be admitted tliat a certain amount of misfortune dogged the Southern men when taking strike. Through a misunderstanding Phillips allowed himself to be stumped, while a rising ball from Biss glanced off Bennett’s wrist on to the top of the wickets. This, however, in no way detracts from the merit of Biss’s and Newth’s bowling, for they both maintained a consistent length, and had to be played carefully. North won the toss and sent South in to bat. The wickets fell quickly until Caterer and Allen became associated. The pair batted well, until Allen punched a ball from Biss into Hemmingson ’s hands, and his departure signalled the beginning of the end fo.: the Southern team, as the remaining batsmen failed miserably to make a stand. North fared little better than their opponents, when taking strike, Hunt, Taylor and Morgan being cleaned bowled by Bennett with only 20 runs on the score board. Newth and Ilemmingson stopped the rot, however, and with the aid of Mackenzie, who batted patiently, brought! victory within their grasp, and the inn- j ings eventually closed for 78: Both teams scored 71 off the bat, the winning margin of seven runs being comprised of byes.
