DANCE HALL COSTS

An idea of the large sums involved in the maintenance of dance halls was given to a London reporter by the manager of a big dance hall in the West End, who said: My maintenance costs are about £IOOO a week, the principal item being £SOO for rent. My other expenses are: Bands, £200; staff, £150; advertising, £100; lighting, £SO. As we only charge 2s 6d for admission, except on Saturday night, we must have 8000 visitors a week at least to cover our expenses. Our worst enemy is fog. Rain is bad for the attendance if there has been a downpour all day, but if it rains about 7 or 7.30 in the evening it often causes a number of people to come to the hall who otherwise might have spent that evening out of doors. j Considerable profits have been made out of some of the large popular dance, halls, which seem to present less financial risk than the smaller and more expensive ballrooms. The owner of a large suburban dance hall gaye his weefkly budget as follows: Two bands, £100; staff, £SO- - £25; lighting, £2O; advertising, ' ' £2O. .
