AN HISTORIC CASTLE
4> FAMILY HOME RESTORED. The story of an ancient and historic house allied to tlie ducal family of Argyll, but reduced to poverty after the Battle of Waterloo, is recalled by a clause in the will of Sir Duncan Alexander Dundas Campbell, Bt., the holder of numerous offices.
Sir Duncan, who lived for some years at Ridgway Place, Wimbledon, was hereditary keeper of /Barcaldle Castle, at one time Gentleman Usher of the Green Rod, and afterwards secretary of |die Order of the Thistle, a member of the King’s Bodyguard of Scotland, and of the Royal Company of Archers, and Garrick Pursuivant of Arms.- He was the author of “The Clan Campbell.” He left property valued at £5425, including' the castle and barony of Barcaldinc, -which was sold in 1842, but which, after along struggle, he was able, to buy back in 1896. A special clause in Sir Duncans will says: “I hope that those who come after me will endeavour to respect my wishes and keep together what I have with much difficulty and anxiety brought together after the trouble which befel the family in my grandfather’s time, when the large estates had to be sold and the family w r ere brought to penury.
