SHANNON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The above meeting was held in' the Council Chambers last evening. The president (Mr A. E. Hyde) presided. Railway Matters. A circular was received from the Minister of Railways pointing out that the Government has decided to encourage the establishment of District Advisory Boards to deal with railway matters (particulars of which have already been received by the Borough Council, of which an outline was published in the News of October 29th). The circular suggests that a meeting of interested, persons be called in each locality by the Chamber of Commerce or like body, with a view to the establishment of the scheme.

Mr Thwaites said the Government already have advisory boards in the Chambers of Commerce and if they don't take any more notice of the proposed boards' suggestions than those of the Chambers, it was not going to do much good. ** The President said there was a difference. If the Boards are formed then they could be represented on the subBoard and they would then have an opportunity to place any requests they might have before the proper authorities.

It was resolved that the Palmerston North Chamber of Commt-ree.be written to suggesting that an advisory committee be set up and that neighbouring towns have representation. % " Social Evening./

Mr Thwaites arew attention to the fact that it was not knowi by many that the five headed punga on the road to Mangahao was protected by the Gov ■ eminent. 113 said there was a danger of the tree being, cut down by persons unaware that it is protected. It is a rarity and should be fenced off and a notice board erected pointing out the penalty if interfered with. It was decided to write to Hie Forestry Department suggesting that this be done.
