St. Helens fielded a weakened team because four of their men were playing in a country match, but they fully deserved their victory. , It,was a strenuous game throughout. Though a much lighter side, St. Helens were quicker on the hall, and often had tho visitors guessing. The New Zealanders were persistent in tackling, however, and kept the score down. The passing on both sides was noteworthy, St. Helens left wing being outstanding. The Blacks drew fjrst blood, Sanders scoring a gift try in the first few minutes, this being their only score in the first spell, while their opponents put on nine points. McComas forced an opening and dropped a goal. Grundy got a goal from a free kick, and Wilson notched a try, which Grundy converted. Tho New Zealanders started much more brightly in the second spell, but fell "away before St. Helens' persistent 'lightning aitacks. Most of the. scoring occurred in the closing stages. Mason, Avery, and Sanders secured tries for the Blacks, Gregory converting one, while Dolan, Smith, Hatyon, Bailey, and Eike crossed for the Lancashire men, Grundy adding goals to two of tho tries.
