THE MAIN HIGHWAYS.
i WORK IN SEPTEMBER. The following .statement shows work carried out by the Main Highways Board during September:— Woodvijle-Palmerston North. —Bridge at o.h. 32 chain: The '6oft span of this bridge is now completed and is being used by traffic. Excavations are being carried out for the abutment of the 40ft span. ' Wellington-Auckland, Via Taranaki. —Ngahauranga Gorge section: Widening work and the construction of two deviations are in hand on this section. A concrete culvert has been completed at 1 mile 42 chains. A concrete culvert is also in hand at 1 mile 18 chains. Johnsonville-Tawa Flat section: 52 chains of tins section haVe been ed to 24 feet. A further 16 chains are in hand.
Pareniata-Horokiwi Valley: Between Paremata and Pahautanui 48 chains, have been widened and metalled, and a further 40 chains are in hand. Be-, tween Pahautanui- and Horokiwi Valley a length of 218 chains is in hand. Between Pahautanui and Horokiwi Valley a length of 218 chains has been completed and a further 92 chains of re-construction is in progress.
Paekakariki-Waikanae: 84 chains of re-construction work on this length has been completed, and a further 140 chains are in hand.
Waikanae-Manakau: Preliminary construction work is in hand over a length of abcut six miles. Levin-Palmerston ! North, via Shannon.—'4 miles of 'preliminary widening and foundation wort is in hand.
