SHANNON ATHLETIC CLUB'S SPORTS.
. « . A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The weather conditions for the Athletic Club's Sports yesterday were not congenial, the day being cloudy and a strong wind prevailed, with every indication of rain, but fortunately the latter held off until the end of the day. However, despite the unpleasantness of the weather, there was a splendid attendance, and had the morning broke fine there is no doubt the attendance woujd have been a record one. Among the visitors were Messrs McVilly and Trace-v, chairman and seeretarv of the N.Z.A.A.A., and Messrs . McCormack and Sullivan, members of the execurtive of the Wellington centre. Also Mr E. G. Sutherland, a champion high jumper,' discus and javelin thrower, who has recently returned from abroad after an absence of four years, during which time he won several South African, Scottish and English athletic championships. The events were got off well to time and combined with the excellent handicapping of Mr G. Watson, proved full of interest, there 1 being good fields and close finishes. During the afternoon the Levin Band rendered several selections, which were much appreciated. The officials and committee are to be congratulated on the manner in which the meeting was conducted. A' special word of praise is due to the secretary (Mr Kohika) and his assistant (Mr A. Birchall). The outstanding feature of the day were the performances of Sutherland, the champion high jumper, discus and javelin thrower, who demonstrated beyond question his superiority in these iicld events, winning the high jump, when he cleared sft 9in and the javelin throwing with a throw of 143 ft llin. lie was loudly applauded for his efforts. During the running of the two-mile cycle handicap one of the rider's pedals struck the rim of a cycle ridden .by another competitor,-this being responsible for three of the riders coming to grief.
